Just murmur some of his titles on a shadowy evening and you'll begin to feel the shivers that he so wonderfully evokes and sustains: "The Listener," "The Camp of the Dog," "Secret Worship," "A Psychical Invasion," "The Man Whom the Trees Loved," "The Doll," "A Descent into Egypt." H.P. If you were to ask readers of supernatural fiction to name the greatest story in the genre, the winner would almost certainly be "The Willows." Odds are that in the top 10 you'd also find "The Wendigo" and "Ancient Sorceries." All three are by Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951), who lived, as Mike Ashley says, "an extraordinary life" and was an even more extraordinary writer.
